Leading the Indian team in the three-match ODI series in New Zealand, Dhawan led from the front in the opener here on Friday, scoring a fluent 77-ball 72 at the top of the order while adding 124 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill.
Leading by 132 runs, India’s second innings folded for 245. Chasing 378, England is now just 119 runs away from the victory target.
The Ranji Trophy was scheduled to start on January 13 this year but was postponed indefinitely by the BCCI due to the third wave of the pandemic.
Shastri, fielding coach R Sridhar, bowling coach Bharath Arun and physio Nitin Patel were found infected during the Oval Test and when junior physio Yogesh Parmar’s test came positive ahead of the fifth Test in Manchester, the game was controversially called off with India leading the series 2-1.
Shastri, who was squarely criticised for launching his new book in London and spreading the Covid-19 virus among the support staff two days before the fourth Test at The Oval.
The 59-year-old Shastri returned positive in a lateral flow test (Rapid Antigen Test) on Sunday and on Monday, his RT-PCR test report confirmed the infection. The fifth and final Test is scheduled to start on September 10.

“They have undergone RT-PCR testing and shall remain in the team hotel and not travel with Team India until confirmation from the medical team,” BCCI said in an official statement.
Shastri asserted that there was never any rift between the two star cricketers. According to the reports, there was a rift between the Team India skipper and opener Rohit but this news was never confirmed.
Shastri’s comments came as Virat Kohli-led India registered a famous 151-run over England in the second Test of the five-match series on Monday.
India beat Australia by three wickets to complete their third highest chase of all time in Tests and thus sealed a 2-1 series win.
Under Shastri, India won 13 out of 21 Tests, 43 out of 60 ODIs and 25 out of 36 T20Is.
