Tamil Nadu: This shopkeeper is offering 1 Kg free onions on purchase of smartphone

Amid skyrocketing onion prices, STR Mobiles, a mobile sales and service centre in Thalayari Street in Tamil Nadu’s Pattukottai, has announced that whoever purchases a smartphone from the shop will be given one kilogram of onions as a freebie.

The posters have not only attracted attention from local buyers but also social media users.

The owner of the shop, Saravana Kumar, said the offer has been received well by customers as nothing of this sort was ever done before in Pattukottai. Kumar added that the footfall at his shop increased since the advertisement was put up.

The shop was opened by Kumar around eight years ago and it sells two mobile phones a day, on average. But after the offer ad was put up, the shop sold eight phones on two consecutive days.

The offer applies to anyone buying a smartphone. They can also choose between small onions and big onions, Kumar said.

To check the national crisis over the rising price of onions, the central government on Friday approved the import of up to 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has been directed to import up to 1 lakh tonne onions in import tenders.
