In a gruesome incident, a nine-month-old baby dies after she was allegedly raped by a man in Hanamkonda area of Warangal district late on Tuesday.
The police said the girl died as the man had gagged her during the rape attempt when she was crying. The accused took the baby while she was sleeping alongside her parents on the terrace of her home and allegedly assaulted her sexually, a senior police officer said.
The parents woke up to find her missing and later saw the accused sexually assaulting her. The family thrashed the man and handed him over to the police. The baby died in hospital.
A case was filed against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was taken into custody and is being questioned, the police said.
The body of the child was shifted to a state-run hospital. The exact cause of her death and whether she was sexually assaulted or not will be known after an autopsy, they added.
