The blue-grey insect, a hybrid of a stick insect and a scorpion, has a combination of features that is disquieting. Its wings and tail move in a stabbing motion, producing a horrifying image that sends chills down one’s spine. The video depicting this eerie creature first appeared on TikTok, rapidly accumulating more than 10 million views. The sighting was alleged to have occurred in the Western Australian outback town of Laverton, a ten-hour drive from Perth.
Concerns arose naturally about the creature’s toxicity and origin. News.com.au contacted Nikolai Tatarnic, Curator of Entomology at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, in response to these inquiries. Tatarnic identified the insect as a member of the Phasmatidae family, a walking stick insect. Certain species within this family exhibit threat or startle displays known as “deimatic behaviour” to deter potential predators.
Tatarnic concluded, based on a close examination, that the insect captured on video belongs to the genus Paronchestus, presumably P. cornutus, as it closely resembles a specimen from Laverton in the museum’s collection. Contrary to its frightening appearance, this species of phasmid is innocuous and non-venomous, consuming only plant-based foods. The entomologist emphasised that the insect’s frightening display in the video functions as a deceptive strategy to effectively deter predators.
Tatarnic also highlighted their attributes, noting that their exceptional camouflage abilities allow them to frequently evade human detection.
Family Phasmatidae insects are capable of regenerating appendages and frequently reproduce via parthenogenesis, an asexual form of reproduction. The family Phasmatidae contains some of the largest insect species ever discovered. The insect with the longest known lifespan belongs to a subspecies of this family that can grow to a total length of 25.2 inches.
