The number of visitors in Choolannur sanctuary in Palakkad, Kerala has gone up, days after a Rajasthan HC judge said that peacocks do not have sex and peahens get pregnant by drinking the tears of the peacock.

Visitors coming to the sanctuary are queuing up at the peafowl to see if and how tears of peacocks can impregnate the peahens.

In the last fortnight, the number of visitors in the sanctuary has gone up from 10-20 to over 300 per day, since Rajasthan High Court judge, Mahesh Chandra Sharma, on May 31 and gave his statement about peacocks.

However, the authorities at the Palakkad sanctuary have taken it upon themselves to educate people about the mating habits of peacocks and show them what the ‘real’ picture is like.

They also show videos peacocks mating to inquisitive visitors and tell them that peacocks mate like any other birds.

“The peacocks spread their feathers and strut around the peahen. Once the peahen shows her willingness, the peacock mounts on the peahen and fertilises the eggs through muscular spasms”, said forester TG Babu, explaining the mating patterns of the peacock with the peahen.

The Choolannur sanctuary, that has close to 300 pea fowls, has become a school for those who want to learn about the mating habits of peacocks.
