TN: Govt planning to provide sub-quota for rural students in medical admission
Sour: OneIndia

Health Minister, C Vijaya Basker, said on Thursday that the Tamil Nadu government is examining legal options for providing sub-quota for rural students in medical admission. The statement came when the Assembly witnessed the intense debate over the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test. It was a response to the issue raised by former School Education Minister and opposition benches on the present uncertainty surrounding the issue.

During zero hour, explaining how NEET would not suit Tamil Nadu on many counts, Thennarasu wanted to know the categorical stand of the State.

He further stated that the government was exerting pressure on the Union home ministry through legal and other means for getting its approval for the two bills.

“Besides, we are considering legal options for providing a sub-quota for rural students. While doing so, the government would be careful that such a move would not face any legal tangle”

Responding to Thennarasu’s insistence that the State should find a permanent solution, Vijaya Basker reminded him that education was on the concurrent list.

“It can be done only by moving it from concurrent to the State list. The CM had put forth a request in this regard to the prime minister”.

Deputy Leader of Opposition, Durai Murugan said, “Health Minister is a doctor. If I were to describe this in his language, it’s is ‘operation success but patient failed’ as far as NEET is concerned”.
