True story behind hundreds of spiders ‘raining’ from sky in Brazil

A video has gone viral on social media showcasing what appears to be, to all intents and purposes, a literal rain of spiders.

The clip came from an area known as Espírito Santo do Dourado, about 200 miles northeast of São Paulo, in Brazil where locals spotted the terrifying scenario. The video was filmed by a 14-year-old boy named João Pedro Martinelli Fonseca who was just sitting in a car minding his own business when he spotted the eight-legged creatures seemingly suspended in mid-air, as if falling to earth.

In reality, the spiders are suspended up there by a huge canopy web that the thousands of arachnids have spun together. According to spider experts, it is pretty common for this type of spider – the Parawixia Bistriata – to make huge webs like this when the weather is warm and wet so that they can help each other catch more prey to eat.
