Not a single day passes when one does not hear news articles about women being molested and raped. Often these news pieces are pushed to a column in some obscure page, unless it is a particularly brutal incident. The aftermath of rape is followed by ‘character assassination’ of the woman and everything about her is scrutinised, the way she dressed, the place where she was, the people she was with and very casually our society blames the victim for the attack.
Often in case of a friend, boyfriend or husband (not here in India, as ‘marital rape’ is not rape) the entire discussion is finished because sadly, ‘consent’ is a term that we don’t understand. It is frustrating that the difference between ‘consensual sex’ and ‘rape’ is not understood and victims continue to suffer as perpetrators go unpunished. Court cases keep on dragging and the people very conveniently sweep the matter aside and forget it.
This is exactly the kind of mind set that, Nafisa Ahmed, has targeted through her tweets. She breaks down the concept of ‘rape’ and explains- what rape is and why taking advantage of someone is NOT acceptable. She uses a $5 analogy to explain her point, by visualising different situations that many use to confuse consensual sex with rape. She even goes into the legal standing of rape claims.
If you ask me for $5, and I’m too drunk to say yes or no, it’s not okay to then go take $5 out of my purse… Just because I didn’t say no.

If I let YOU borrow $5, that doesn’t give the right for your FRIEND to take $5 out of my purse.
“But you gave him some, why can’t I?”— nafisa ahmed (@thatxxv) August 16, 2016
If you put a gun to my head to get me to give you $5, you still stole $5. Even if I physically handed you $5.

If you steal $5 and I can’t prove it in court, that does NOT mean you didn’t steal $5.

Just because I gave you $5 in the past, doesn’t mean I have to give you $5 in the future.

If you can understand alllllll of that, how do you not understand the concept of rape?
