In a shocking incident, two Indian origin siblings who were suffering severe nut allergies were asked by the Emirates crew to sit inside the toilet while cashew nuts were being served on the flight.

As per the reports, the airline was warned before thrice about the siblings, Shannen Sahota, and Sudeep Sahota’s nut allergy. But to their dismay, fried nuts were served to passengers 40 minutes after the flight took off from Birmingham airport.

The siblings said that they told the airline about the severe allergies that they were suffering from while booking the tickets, checking in their luggage and after boarding the flight. The siblings started panicking after they discovered that there were cashew nuts in the chicken biryani.

The siblings claimed that the airline crew told them they would feel comfortable if they moved to the toilet as they have comfortable cushions and pillow there. But the siblings refused to move to the toilet to spend their seven-hour journey by sitting at the back of the plane with a blanket over their heads.

“We felt so degraded and embarrassed. It was horrible and it was meant to be a happy occasion but the start of our holiday was ruined,” said Shannen

“We were stunned when a supervisor told us ‘one way around it’ was for us to spend the flight in the cabin loo,” Shannen added.

The airline said in a statement that the booking record did not reflect any mention of nut allergy and they can never guarantee nut-free flights.

The statement reads “We are sorry to hear about Ms. Sahota’s complaint. Emirates tries to cater to all passengers specific needs by offering a number of special meals. However, Emirates cannot guarantee completely nut-free flights.”
