Unnao district administration exhumed the remains of 32-year-old Yunus Khan, the key CBI witness in the rape case involving Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Saturday. Yunus was a witness for CBI in the murder case of the father of a teenage girl raped in the district last year. Yunus died in a mysterious circumstance on August 18 and was buried by his family members without any post-mortem.

Heavy police force had to be deployed in Makhi area since the Khan’s family opposed the digging of grave calling it against the rule of Sharia law. Eight members of the family were arrested after they tried to take their lives in front of Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath’s residence while protesting against the exhumation.

According to Circle Officer of Safipur range, Vivek Ranjan, the body was exhumed on the orders of Unnao Superintendent of Police Harish Kumar who has ordered an inquiry into the death of Khan. Although the kin of the deceased calls Khan’s demise a natural death. His wife, Shabina and other claimed that he was suffering from a serious liver disease.

“Yunus’ liver was damaged and he was very serious since the last four years, even doctors had lost hope of his recovery,” said Shabina in Lucknow on Saturday.

Whereas, the rape victim’s uncle has a different stand on the whole matter. He registered a complaint with Makhi police on August 20 claiming that the MLA Sengar had hands in the murder of Yunus Khan.
