An indefinite strike by meat sellers across Uttar Pradesh started from Monday against the crackdown on illegitimate and mechanised slaughterhouses. Fish sellers were also decided to join the commotion. Thus, non-vegetarian dishes go off the menu in numerous parts of the state.

“We have decided to intensify our strike from tomorrow. All shops will remain closed. Fish sellers too have joined us and are extending support to us,” said Lucknow Bakra Gosht Vypar Mandal office bearer Mubeen Qureshi as per a report in HT.

There was no question of the strike being called off anytime soon following the crackdown. “It will go on indefinitely,” he added.

Owing to the strike, non-vegetarian food channels, including the well-known Tunday and Rahim’s have started serving mutton and chicken dishes as buffalo meat became limited.

“The meat sellers are piqued over the crackdown on slaughter houses which has adversely hit the livelihood of lakhs of people,” Qureshi said.

The new Yogi Adityanath government has announced closure of illegitimate slaughterhouses and stern enforcement of the prohibition on cow smuggling to achieve a crucial electoral promise.
