Sanjay Nishad’s Fish Remark: Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Minister and NISHAD Party chief Sanjay Nishad has sparked a fresh online debate after a video that’s been moving around on social media appeared to show him saying fish prepared without onion and garlic is “vegetarian”.

People are reacting to this becausein the usual dietary classification system fish is considered non-vegetarian no matter how it’s cooked even if onion, garlic or other ingredients are left out. The viral discussion has therefore focused on the distinction between the ingredients used in a dish and the food’s underlying classification.

Sanjay Nishad’s Fish Remark

A News18 Uttar Pradesh social-media post carrying a video of Sanjay Nishad quotes the minister as saying that fish prepared without onion and garlic is vegetarian. The clip has since been picked up and circulated across social media platforms.

“When it was earlier said that fish without garlic and onion is vegetarian, no ‘Maharaj ji’ countered it. Staying silent means the statement is correct,” Nishad said, smiling as he made the point. He went on to claim that the symbol of the Uttar Pradesh government, a bow and an arrow, is the emblem of the Nishad community, one he said the community takes pride in.

Is Fish Without Onion and Garlic Vegetarian?

No. From a standard food-classification perspective, fish remains a non-vegetarian food even when cooked without onion, garlic or other non-vegetarian ingredients.

Onion and garlic are ingredients that some people avoid for religious, cultural, dietary or personal reasons. Their absence does not turn an animal-derived food such as fish into a vegetarian food.

This is also why terms such as “no onion-no garlic,” “satvik” or “Jain-style” should not automatically be interpreted as meaning that every dish prepared that way is vegetarian.
