Uttarakhand Tourism launches Snow Leopard tour in Harsil; Bookings Open, details here

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia), also known as the ounce, is a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. Snow leopards in India are found in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Uttarakhand Tourism is now organising the Snow Leopard Tour for the first time in February. Uttarakhand becomes 3rd state after Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh to organise such tours. This will enable Tourists to see snow leopards living in the Himalayan regions.

Snow Leopard Tour will be organized at Harsil Village which is along the river Bhagirathi. Harsil is also called ‘Mini Switzerland’ of India and is situated very close to Gangotri. The Uttarakhand government is organising the Snow Leopard Tour to promote Wildlife Conservation. 

Tourists for the first batch will be selected on a first come first serve basis.

Uttarakhand Tourism Department tweets information

This was stated by the Uttarakhand tourism department on its Twitter handle. It is part of the Secure Himalaya Project. The project has been launched by the Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

GEF, Ministry of Forest, Environment, Climate Change, UNDP India, and Uttarakhand Forest Department have partnered with the State Tourism Board for Snow Leopard Tour.

 It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because the global population is estimated to number less than 10,000 mature individuals and is expected to decline by about 10% by 2040.
