Villagers lynch mentally-ill woman suspecting her a ‘witch’

A mentally-challenged woman was thrashed to death by a group of people, who suspected her to be a witch in Maghtai village in Agra.

The incident happened when Maan Devi, went outside her house to relieve herself. She lost her path in the dark and reached an adjacent colony. A girl, who was sleeping outside her house, got frightened on seeing her as Devi was wearing a white saree.

The girl started shouting and soon after locals assembled at the spot. They suspected she was a witch, and thus beat her up.

The moment some women identified her, Devi was already badly injured. Her family took her to an Agra hospital. She was released after first-aid but she died on the way back home.

Inspector DP Sharma of Doki police station confirmed that the woman was mentally-challenged. Devi received an injury on her head. The body has been sent for post-mortem, he said. A case of murder has been registered against two persons in the case.
