India is full of festivals. More than one festival is celebrated every month. This month, Hindus across India will observe Vishwakarma Puja on September 16.

On the day of Vishwakarma Puja, people worship electronic devices, tools and refrain from using them. Idols of Lord Vishwakarma are installed in temples and marquees and devotees perform puja, praying for a better future, safe working conditions, and success in their respective fields.

Vishwakarma Puja 2020 Date and Subh Muhurat:

The Puja will be observed on September 16. The Chaturthi tithi starts on September 15 at 11.01 (Tuesday). The Chaturthi tithi will end on September 16 at 7.15 (Wednesday). It is auspicious to do the puja between 10.09 minutes to 11.37 on September 16.

According to an established belief, the auspicious time of worshiping Lord Vishwakarma Shubh Muhurat (auspicious puja time) is decided and dependent based on the transit of the sun. The reason behind this is that all the festivals celebrated in India are determined according to the lunar calendar, while the date of Vishwakarma worship is done by examining/ looking at the sun.

Significance of Vishwakarma Puja:

On this day, factory and shop owners conduct puja to seek blessing for excellence in their field. All the electronic devices are worshipped on this day.  The eastern states of the country like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Tripura, and Assam observe the day, while Nepal too celebrates it.

Rituals of Vishwakarma Puja:

  • Devotees worship the Lord as well as his Vahan, the elephant.
  • Workers also worship their tools on this day and shops and factories usually remain close.
  • On the day of Vishwakarma Puja, the idol of the divine architect is placed in decorated marquees or on raised platforms in shops and factory floors, where the puja rituals take place.
  • Often family members of the workers too participate in the festivities.
  • Following the puja, a gourmet community feast is prepared which is then eaten by workers and their families.

Vishwakarma Puja story:

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishwakarma constructed the holy city of Dwarka which was ruled by Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krishna worshipped Samudradev, who pleased with his worship and gave him and his clan a piece of land measuring 12 yojans and Lord Vishwakarma build for him the city of Dwarka. He was also the architect behind the Maya Sabha, which played a pivotal role in taking the plot of Mahabharata forward.
