VA Chapter 35 Pay: Chapter 35 is the VA’s Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program, often called DEA. It is meant for the spouse or child of a Veteran or service member who died, went missing, was captured, or became permanently and totally disabled because of a service-connected condition. The VA says this benefit can help pay for school or cover expenses while a person is training for a job. It is a monthly payment sent directly to the student, not a tuition waiver sent to the school.
That difference matters a lot. Chapter 35 is useful money, but it does not work like a program that wipes out the full school bill. Students may still need other aid to cover all costs. The VA’s current guidance also says the payment is made directly to the student, and the amount depends on the kind of training and the student’s enrollment level.
What can it Pay for?
Chapter 35 is not just for a college classroom. The VA says it can be used for college and university degrees, vocational or technical training, non-college degree programs, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, licensing tests, certification tests, test prep, correspondence courses, and distance learning. Students may also qualify for education and career counseling.
The money is meant to help with school costs or training expenses, so it can make a real difference even when it does not cover everything. For many families, that monthly support can help pay for books, travel, supplies, or other daily costs while the student is in school or learning a trade.
How much Money is Paid?
The current Chapter 35 rates run from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026. For college or university students, the VA pays up to $1,574 a month for full-time enrollment, $1,244 for three-quarter time, and $912 for half time. If a student is enrolled less than half time, the VA can still pay up to the listed amount, but not more than the actual tuition and fees.
The VA also says payment can be prorated if a student is enrolled for only part of a month. For non-college degree programs, the same monthly rates apply based on scheduled clock hours. This is why Chapter 35 is often best seen as monthly support money rather than a full school bill payment.
Who can receive it
A spouse or child may qualify only if both the student and the Veteran or service member meet the VA’s rules. The Veteran or service member must fit one of the VA’s listed categories, such as permanent and total service-connected disability, death from a service-connected condition, death in the line of duty, missing in action, or being captured or detained in the line of duty for more than 90 days. For children, the VA says they can be married or unmarried, but active duty and discharge status can affect use of the benefit.
The benefit length also depends on when training began. The VA says students who started on or after August 1, 2018 may receive up to 36 months of benefits. Earlier training may allow up to 45 months.
