In his Independence Day speech from Red Fort Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new scheme dedicated to health called ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan’. The scheme is a flagship project of Ayushman Bharat. Ayushman Bharat is a national healthcare policy that was introduced by the government few months back in 2018. The ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan’ is expected to be launched this year on September 25. PM Modi announced ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan’ will be launched on September 25 this year. PM Modi believes that poverty leads to poor healthcare and unaffordability to the basic needs like treatment.
“The healthcare initiatives of the government will have a positive impact on the 50 crore Indians. It is important to ensure that we free the poor of India from poverty, due to which they cannot afford healthcare,” he said while delivering the fifth and last Independence Day speech of his current term as the Prime Minister.
Ayushman Bhrat also refered to as ‘Modicare’, was launched by the Government of India in February this year. The ambitious healthcare policy promises to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families, based on SECC (Socio-Economic Caste Census) database, providing coverage up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

Benefits of the scheme are portable across the country and the beneficiaries will be allowed to take cashless benefits from any public/private empanelled hospitals across the country.
