The construction of a grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh is about to begin. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is all set to attend the event on August 5. The Ayodhya temple construction is in talks these days.  It was said that a time capsule will be placed beneath the Ram Temple construction site.

However, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai rejected the claims are referred it as mere rumours. “These reports are false,” said Rai. Only the official statement issued by the Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra Trust should be ascertained as the correct information, Rai urged people.

The time capsule, however, has risen the curiosity among the people.

What is a Time Capsule?

The time capsule is a historic cache of information or goods to communicate with future generations. It also helps archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians to study about a site. Generally, time capsules are placed at the foundations of the buildings.

Why a time capsule is placed?

The only purpose of placing a time capsule is to protect the history of the place and avoid any future conflict. It is a way to try to tell the next generation the information and importance of the respective place.

How many time capsules are placed in India?

  • The first time capsule was named as ‘Kalpaatra’ containing post Independence history of India on August 15, 1972, and placed outside one of the gates of Red Fort by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
  • The second most time capsule was buried on March 6, 2010, near the auditorium of IIT Kanpur by first female President of India, Pratibha Devi Singh Patil.
  • To mark 50 years of the foundation of the temple, Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, the third time capsule was placed in 2010.
  • In the year 2014, Alexandra Girls’ Education Institution, Mumbai, placed a time capsule that is scheduled to be opened on September 1, 2062,  on the occasion of the bi-centennial anniversary of the school.
  • A time capsule was placed in the premises of Lovely Professional University in the presence of Prime Minister Modi on the occasion of ‘106th Indian Science Congress’ organised by LPU. The time capsule contains  100 different items that represent a cross-section of technology at that time in India for the next 100 years by three distinguished Nobel Laureates- Hungary-born Israeli biochemist Avram Hershko, British-born American physicist F. Duncan M. Haldane and German-American biochemist Thomas Christian Südhof.

Time capsules have been used by many other countries in the world.
