Jagat Prakash Nadda: Know about BJP master strategist and new party President

Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday unanimously elected Jagat Prakash Nadda to formally take over the reins of the party from Amit Shah as the new president of the party.

The 59-year-old BJP leader Nadda was born on 2 December, 1960, to Narain Lall Nadda and Shrimati Krishna Nadda. His studied at the St Xaviers School in Patna, Bihar, and then got his bachelor’s degree in Arts from Patna University. He later shifted from Patna to Himachal Pradesh to pursue LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

He is married to Mallika Nadda, who is daughter of Lok Sabha MP Jayshree Banerjee.

JPP Nadda: BJP’s master strategist

Nadda’s decades-long experience in the organisation, starting from student politics, proximity to the RSS and clean image are seen as his strengths. He is known to have a good working relationship with both Shah and Modi. He is also known to be close to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Nadda was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the top post after he was part of the council of ministers during the first tenure of Modi as PM.

He was MLA in Himachal Pradesh for three terms before he moved to the central government as cabinet minister from 1998 to 2003. In April 2012, Nadda was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Nadda was the health minister in the first term of Modi government and after BJP returned to power for a consecutive term in May 2019, Nadda was made the working president of the party.

In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha election, he was in-charge of the BJP’s election campaign in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, where the party faced a tough challenge from the grand alliance of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The party won 62 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.
