Women's IPL starts today: Due to lack of support, tickets are free

The women’s T20 challenge which is also called as Women’s IPL is all set to start from today. The Women’s T20 Challenge which is the female equivalent of the much publicised Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played between May 6th and May 11th at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.

The tournament, which begins today, hasn’t even got a quarter of the hype surrounding the IPL despite having big sponsors like Hotstar and Paytm.

Despite the consistence performance by Indian Women’s team in the sport, the tickets for the tournament have been made available for free to encourage viewers of cricket in India to give female cricketers the same support as given to the male cricketers.

In the past two years, the women’s team has defeated England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and more in various different tournaments, even winning the ODI series in South Africa.

According to many, free tickets for the Women’s IPL is the only way to help support the players in this league, and encourage viewers to get accustomed to women cricketers.

Indian Women Cricketers like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Veda Krishnamurthy, and even teen Jemimah Rodrigues have advertisements in their kitty, still we are acting as if these players don’t have brand value and can’t generate the kind of fanfare men can.

The only thing that’s a slight improvement, is that other than a daily allowance, this time they will at least get match fees.

On May 6, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas will be playing against Smriti Mandhana-led Trailblazers at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur at 7:30 pm IST. The match will be broadcast on Hotstar.
