Understanding Polio and Its Spread

Polio spreads easily when people eat or drink contaminated food and water, or don’t wash hands properly. The virus grows in the intestines and can reach the nerves. This can stop muscles from working and make children unable to move parts of their body. Early signs of polio include fever, feeling very tired, stiff neck, headaches and weakness in arms or legs.

India fought polio successfully through the Pulse Polio Immunisation Program. Millions of kids get the oral polio vaccine (OPV) or inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) every year. Experts warn that if vaccination stops or people forget about hygiene, the virus could come back, sometimes from other countries where polio still exists.

How to Stay Safe from Polio?

Doctors advice vaccination is the best way to stop polio. People should also wash hands often, drink clean water, and keep surroundings clean. If a child suddenly feels weak or cannot move properly, parents must tell a doctor right away.

Besides vaccination, staying healthy can help. Ayurveda suggests eating well, sleeping enough and using herbs like Giloy, Tulsi and Turmeric to make the body stronger.

World Polio Day was started by Rotary International to honor Dr Jonas Salk, who made the first polio vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) wants to completely stop polio around the world in the next few years. Only a few countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan still have polio cases even now.

Even though India has been polio-free for more than ten years, doctors remind everyone that “continued vigilance, vaccination, and community awareness remain crucial to keeping the virus at bay.”
