Every year on September 27, World Tourism Day is marked to create and foster awareness about the tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and its contribution to the overall development of a place.
In 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) played an important role in making tourism around the world and making tourism popular.
Late Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian national, is the person behind the idea of commemorating September 27 as World Tourism Day and was recognized for his contribution in 2009.
September 27 was chosen as the date because the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted on this date in 1970. This adoption was considered a milestone for global tourism.
