WORLD WATER MONITORING DAY HISTORY
The World Water Monitoring Day was established by the America’s Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) in 2003. The organization intended to educate the general public on the significance of routinely monitoring their water sources. Originally, the date of the global outreach program was October 18. The date of October 18 was chosen because it would honor the 1972 passage of the U.S. Clean Water Act by Congress. However, the ACWF quickly recognized that certain nations would be unable to participate in the World Water Monitoring Day because their water bodies would freeze in October. Thus, to maximize the number of participants and participating countries, the official date was moved back by a month. One million or more individuals participate in the initiative annually. Using water testing instruments, they examine the water for dissolved oxygen, acidity, temperature, and turbid’s clarity.
The benefactors of World Water Monitoring Day have consistently changed over the years. Current organizers are affiliated with EarthEcho International. It is a non-profit environmental organization that was founded to commemorate the renowned oceanographer Philippe Cousteau. The late Cousteau family established the Philippe Cousteau Foundation, but after disputes with the Cousteau Society over the name, EarthEcho International was adopted. EarthEcho participates in numerous activities, such as World Water Monitoring Day. The event’s name was altered to EarthEcho Water Challenge when it became part of their organization. But regardless of the moniker, the purpose of the day remains the same: to educate the public about water sources and the need for regular safety inspections.
