Xiaomi Is Shutting Down TikTok Competitor Zili in India

Xiaomi is preparing to shut down its Zili platform for sharing short videos. Here is everything you need to know about this new development, as the company will soon cease operations in the Indian market.

For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant’s Zili was introduced to the Google Play Store in 2018 and operated similarly to another social media powerhouse, TikTok.

In other words, Zili allowed users to share or view short videos on their platform and even attempted to fill the void left by the Indian government’s ban on TikTok. Now, however, it appears that Xiaomi will also leave the market, as the company plans to cease operations on March 13, 2023 at 23:59 GMT “due to an operational adjustment.”

The application has been removed from the Google Play Store as of this moment. In addition, Zili stated, “All services on the Zili app will be disabled as of the shutdown date, including but not limited to downloads, Z-points redemptions or withdrawals, etc., and all user data will be deleted from our server after that date and will no longer be retrievable.” Notably, this decision to shut down the platform would have likely led to a number of layoffs in the country.

Before it was taken down, this app was quite popular on the Indian market, with Play Store downloads surpassing 100 million. Zili experienced explosive growth after TikTok was banned in India in 2020. It remains to be seen which other app for sharing short videos will fill the void left by these two platforms.
