2019 Lok Sabha: Changing earlier decision, Priya Dutt to now contest elections

Mumbai: Accepting Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi’s order, former Congress MP Priya Dutt has decided to make a come back and will now contest 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

High-profile Mumbai Congress politicians and former MP from Mumbai North Central constituency, Priya Dutt had earlier in January announced that she would not contest the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections, as “it was time to take a break from active politics”.

Dutt, 52, had then said that there was lot of speculation about her plans to stand for the 2019 polls, especially after she was recently dropped as an AICC Secretary, but she had discussed the issue with Congress President Rahul Gandhi a couple of months back on her plans to “step out for a while”, as she had made it clear in 2005.

Mumbai North Central constituency, which now is currently represented by BJP MP Poonam Mahajan who defeated Priya dutt in 2014, is considered a winnable seat for Congress. The party was finding it difficult to have a strong replacement after Priya Dutt had refused to contest. Finally when Rahul Gandhi was in Mumbai to address a rally, he told Dutt that she will need to contest and issues about infighting can be sorted later. Following a discussion with Rahul Gandhi who was in Mumbai to address a rally, Dutt changed her decision and is now slated to contest polls from the now Mumbai North Central constituency.

Priya — daughter of the late actor couple Sunil Dutt and Nargis, and sister of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt – joined politics after her father’s demise in May 2005 and was elected to the 14th and 15th Lok Sabha, before facing defeat in 2014.
