Tumblr announced on Monday that the microblogging social networking website will ban the posting of any adult content after its new policy kicks on December 17. With a few exceptions, the ban will restrict users from posting explicit sexual content.

In a blog post shared on Tumblr, the CEO Jeff D’Onofrio said, “We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfil our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).”

According to the blog, the new community guideline shall take over from December 17 and the users will be given a heads up in advance with steps to preserve the content. The company is relying on automated tools in order to identify the objectionable material.

The microblogging giant was acquired by the then-CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer for $1.1 billion; later Yahoo was bought by Verizon.

Posts that Tumblr identifies as NSFW(Not Safe For Work) will not be immediately deleted but would rather be made private. Users have two weeks to save their content from the website after which the pornographic posts will be taken down.

Earlier, Apple’s iOS store had removed Tumblr’s mobile app after child pornography surfaced on the platform.
