The #MeToo storm that arrived this year in October exposed sexual predators across various industries. Be it openly or with the veil of anonymity, women shared their heart-shattering experiences of harassment.
Recently, various famous Bollywood actors came together for a roundtable discussion over many issues including the MeToo movement.
The discussion brought in opinions regarding how can the work environment be bettered for the women in Bollywood. Rani Mukerji, one of the most celebrated actors also participated along with Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Tabu, Alia Bhatt and Tapsee Pannu.
While discussing the issue, Mukerji suggested that girls should be taught martial arts. She further went on to say that self-defence should be made an absolutely essential part of the school activities.
Deepika Padukone countered her statement by saying, “why to even bring it to the point where girls should learn self-defence”, to which Anushka gave a nod. Rani later said, “You can’t tell mothers how to bring up their children.” Internet became furious to those comments by Mukerji and soon Twitterati came up with their strong criticism.
Oh, ok.
So you can’t tell people how to bring up their sons to be respectful of women, but perfectly practical to make sure all women, girls, infants are enrolled for karate classes en-masse, pronto.Dafuq Rani? #ranimukherjee and Preity are a blot on the actresses of their time https://t.co/lRAQNLGSYY— megzie (@megzie__) December 30, 2018
Hey, Rani Mukerji, just a quick reminder because it seems to me you’re being awfully forgetful or just awfully ignorant, but either way listen carefully.
The #MeToo movement was stemmed from an issue of power abuse, not the lack of self defence. +pic.twitter.com/UFhZQ55kAt— Shreya || Promise (@listenboitae) December 30, 2018
Deepika, Anushka, And Alia really were making great points while Rani here makes martial arts noises. You can’t make this shit up. pic.twitter.com/sceqsEj71N

Ok. So you can’t tell hundreds of mothers that they shouldn’t bring up misogynistic sons but you want to tell millions of girls out there to compulsorily learn martial arts and defend themselves? This is nothing but victim shaming and blaming.
Shame on you, Rani Mukerji! https://t.co/cfvn74fzPM— Sumeet Kaur (@Sumeetkaur102) December 30, 2018
