Teej is a three-day-long Hindu festival that celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival is widely celebrated by married women across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan. Women believe that fasting and devoting prayers to the deities on this day is rewarded with prosperity and a happy married life.
Hariyali Teej is observed two days before Nag Panchami and is also popular as ‘Chotti Teej’ or ‘Shravan Teej’.
In 2020, Haryali Teej will take place on July 23, Kajari Teej on August 6, and Hartalika Teej on August 21.

Significance of Hariyali Teej:
The significance of such a festival is for women to ask for special blessings by Lord Shiva, to have attained a good husband in life, and to pray for his longevity and prosperity. Thus, married women seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati on Teej Festival for marital bliss.
Story of Hariyali Teej:
According to Hindu texts, Parvati is an incarnation of Lord Shiva’s first wife, Sati. Lord Shiva became grief-stricken and withdrawn after she immolated herself in protest of her father’s disapproval of him. It took her 108 subsequent births to bring Shiva out of his meditative state and get him to accept her as his wife again. Her 108th birth was as Goddess Parvati. The invocation of Parvati’s blessing during the festival is believed to bring about continued marital bliss.
Celebrations of Hariyali Teej:
Women observe a fast and pray through the night. In the morning, they take a bath and dress in red sarees and fine jewellery to worship Goddess Parvati. Special songs are sung, and the women decorate their hands with henna. Married daughters are presented with sweets and clothes by their mothers. The girls engaged to be married receive gifts of henna, bangles, clothes, and sweets from the in-laws.
