American Zoo Day 2023: American Zoo Day, observed on July 1, focuses on highlighting the significance of zoos. Initially, zoos were small, confined spaces that resembled prisons for animals. However, as people became more knowledgeable about animal rights, this changed. Today, zoos in the United States are enormous and replicate the natural habitat of the confined animals. This is why modern zoos serve as sanctuaries rather than places where animals are exhibited. To honour and celebrate American Zoo Day, we recommend you visit your local zoo and be prepared to see exotic animal species you have never seen before.
HISTORY OF AMERICAN ZOO DAY
American Zoo Day is observed annually on July 1 to commemorate the opening of the Philadelphia Zoo to the public in 1874. You inquire, what is so remarkable about this zoo? It was the nation’s first menagerie. The zoo’s charter was ratified in 1859, but it did not open to the public until much later due to the Civil War. Additionally, the Philadelphia Zoo is significant because it is dedicated to the preservation of numerous animal species. The zoo currently shelters over 1,300 animals.
Although zoos have existed in various parts of the globe since ancient Egypt, it wasn’t until the 19th century that zoos became a worldwide phenomenon. Unfortunately, these enclosures were initially constructed for entertainment purposes, with little regard for the animals’ welfare and longevity. However, after World War II, zoos also became reproductive grounds for animals on the verge of extinction. Believe it or not, zoos have played a significant role in preventing the extinction of numerous endangered species. In 1947, there were only fifty Hawaiian geese left in Hawaii. Two of these geese were confined in an English sanctuary, where they began to reproduce.
Importantly, scientists frequently examine zoos and the exotic animals housed within them in order to comprehend their behaviour and devise methods for creating better living conditions for mammals. Since 1830, many of these investigations have been published in the ‘Journal of Zoology’.
