Kamika Ekadashi 2023: Kamika Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day of the Shravan month’s Krishna Paksha. According to the Gregorian calendar, this auspicious event occurs on July 13 this year. Despite being one of the lesser-known Ekadashis, it holds great significance as devotees believe that fasting on this day will bring them the same blessings as the Aswamedha Yagya – the horse sacrifice ritual believed to be the grandest of the Vedic religious ceremonies practised in ancient India.
Kamika Ekadashi 2023: Significance
The Brahmavaivarta Purana describes the significance of Kamika Ekadashi as follows: “This day in the month of Shravan destroys all human sins and grants their desires. “Whoever worships Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaf, the Lord cleanses them of their sins.”
Observance
Along with chanting hymns dedicated to Tulsi Devi, devotees pray to Lord Vishnu and perform ‘abhisheka’ to His lotus feet, conch shell, and ‘Sudarshana Chakra’. There is a belief that Tulsi, a devotee of the Lord, is fasting on this day, so it is forbidden to pick basil leaves.

Benefits
If a person observes a fast to the best of their ability (without even a drop of water, or simply by avoiding rice ingestion…), they are said to receive divine blessings and be liberated from life’s obstacles. There is a belief that fasting on this auspicious day can bring more merit than taking a holy dip in the Ganges of Kashi (Varanasi), as well as relief from ‘Pitra Dosha’, good health, and prosperity.
