Prophet Muhammad’s birthday 2023: History, Dates, Activities, and FAQs

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday 2023: Muslims observe Mawlid, or the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, during Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. This year’s event occurs on September 27. As it commemorates the birthday of Islam’s founder and the proclamation of the first verse of the Quran, many countries with significant Muslim populations observe this day as a national holiday. The Shia community observes the event on the seventeenth of the month, while the Sunni community observes it on the twelfth. It is a day to commemorate the progenitor of one of the most influential religions in the world, with millions of adherents.

History of the Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad

Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) was born in Mecca on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal in 570 A.D. It is believed that he is a descendant of Ishmael, one of Abraham’s two sons. His mother perished when he was six years old, so his uncle Abu Talib and grandfather Abdul-Muttalib raised him after his mother’s death.

The birthday of Muhammad is commemorated in mosques with religious sermons and Quranic verse recitations. In the eighth century, al-Khayzuran converted the residence where Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) was born into a place of worship, marking the beginning of birthday celebrations. Despite the fact that public celebrations of Muhammad’s birth did not commence until four centuries after his death, textual evidence suggests that the earliest Mawlid text dates back to the 12th century and is likely of Persian origin.

Sunni and Shia Muslims commemorate the day differently. Shiites believe that on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the Prophet Muhammad chose Hazrat Ali to succeed him. The Sunni religion does not observe a day of mourning on this particular date but does pray frequently throughout the month.
In the 1970s and 1980s, it was customary to hear recitations of Islamic poetry from the Mawlid on television, on stage, and from Abu Dhabi’s Bahar Palace. Although the Mawlid was chanted more frequently in the past, it is now only performed on the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.
