ITR e-Filing Vault Security: More and more people are now filing income tax returns online. Because of that, keeping tax details safe has become just as important as filing the return on time. Tax experts are now telling first-time taxpayers to turn on the Income Tax Department’s e-Filing Vault Higher Security feature.

They say it can help protect the account from unwanted access and misuse of personal details. The Income Tax Department says this service is for registered users and gives the account an extra layer of security with second-factor authentication for login and password reset.

The feature is not compulsory, but it is made to protect important tax data like Income Tax Returns, Annual Information Statements, Form 26AS, and refund information. The official portal says users can lock the account with one more check after the password step. This means even if someone knows the password, they still may not get in without the second security step.

What the e-Filing Vault Means

According to CA Aditya Sesh, Founder and Managing Director of Basiz Fund Services, the e-Filing Vault works like a strong lock for the tax account. He said, “The e-Filing Vault is essentially a security lock for your Income Tax e-filing account. Think of it as the tax portal’s version of two-factor authentication, the same kind of protection you get with internet banking,” Sesh said. Once it is switched on, the account gets extra protection through methods like Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking, DSC, or EVC options.

Sesh also said, “Most people don’t realise how much personal financial data sits on that portal. This feature is a straightforward way to make sure only the right person can access it,” he added. The official user manual also says the vault can help when a taxpayer logs in or resets the password.

Why New Taxpayers should Turn it on

New taxpayers often focus only on filing the return. They may forget that the tax portal also holds sensitive money details. Sesh warned that this is a common weak spot. He said, “First-time taxpayers typically focus on filing their return and overlook account security entirely, which is a gap worth closing from the outset,” he said.

He also explained that the vault helps guard against fake logins, changes to refund details, and identity theft. He said, “As tax administration becomes increasingly digital, cybersecurity is no longer separate from compliance; it is part of it. Activating this feature is a simple, one-time step that meaningfully strengthens the security of any income tax account,” Sesh said. The Income Tax Department’s FAQs also recommend the service for securing the account, even though it stays optional.

How It Works

The feature is easy to use. After turning it on, the taxpayer must pass one more check before logging in or changing the password.

The official portal says the available methods include Aadhaar-linked OTP, Net Banking, Digital Signature Certificate, Electronic Verification Code through a pre-validated bank account, and Electronic Verification Code through a pre-validated demat account.
