The management of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sacked a resident doctor and served show cause notice to a consultant following the death of a nursing staff Rajbir Kaur during her delivery on February 4.

“A termination order to the senior resident, anaesthesiology, who was found guilty for willful absence of his duties will be issued,” reads the hospital’s press statement. A show cause notice will also be served to consultant doctor of obstetrics and gynaecology for not being available for the emergency surgery regardless of being informed.

AIIMS has decided to give Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family with a job for a family member as “compassionate appointment”.

On January 16, Kaur was admitted to AIIMS for a low-risk delivery. The labour was fine untill 5am after which there was a unexpected drop in the foetal heart beat requiring emergency surgery. Regardless of the surgery, it was a still-birth and the mother went into cardiac arrest. Kaur died on February 4 in the ICU.

But afterwards, the AIIMS’ nursing union went on strike claiming medical carelessness and five doctors were suspended without probe. This infuriated doctors who then went on strike demanding enquiry. Now the action was taken based on the report of the enquiry committee and meetings with the director.

The senior resident of gynaecology involved in Kaur’s treatment will be issued a “displeasure memorandum”. A warning will also be given to a junior resident, anaesthesiology for “having left the operation theatre under pressure of residents of obstetrics and gynaecology’,” said the statement.

To avoid such occurrences in the future, the head of the department of anaesthesiology has been directed to ensure round-the-clock availability of senior residents at the maternity OT and a consultant on the hospital grounds to oversee anaesthesiology services in diverse areas.
