Albariño Day 2023: International Albario Day, observed annually on August 1, originated from a competition between two men, Bernardo Quintanilla and Ernesto Zàrate, to determine 1952’s finest wine. The following year was the inaugural celebration of Albario Day. Several countries cultivate the albario grape, but Spain is the major producer. The Albario grape is used to generate white wine varieties and has a distinct aroma of plants.
ALBARIO DAY HISTORY
On the final day of the Albario festival, International Albario Day is celebrated. This festival, also known as Fiesta del Albario, takes place in Cambados, Spain, during the week preceding the first Sunday of August. The festival originated from a wager between Bernardo Quintanilla and Ernesto Zarate in 1952 to ascertain which wine was the best.
Albario and Alvarinho are grape varieties cultivated primarily in Galicia, an autonomous community of Spain. This grows in Portugal in Melgaco and Monaco. The grapes used to produce varietal white wines are of the ‘Vitis vinifera’ species. Albario is also cultivated in California, particularly in Clarksburg, Napa, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, and Los Carneros. Washington and Oregon also produce this varietal. Contrary to the prevalent belief that monks from Cluny, France, brought albario grapes to Spain, research indicates that these grapes have existed in Spain for centuries. In addition, no traces of Albario, even under a different name, have been discovered in Cluny.
Albario is blended with other grapes such as Loureiro, Godelho, Cainho, and Arinto in other locations, including Lima, Braga, Valdeorras, and Ribeiro. The alcohol content of wine produced from albario fruits ranges between 11.5% and 12.5%. In addition, the grape has a distinct botanical aroma with a citrusy undertone, as well as thick skins and numerous seeds, which may contribute to an acrid aftertaste.
