AT&T Data Breach Exposes Millions of Social Security Numbers and Passcodes on Dark Web: AT&T, a prominent telecommunications company, has recently fallen victim to a data compromise that threatens the security of millions of its customers. The breach, which was uncovered on the “dark web,” compromised the confidential personal information of current and former account holders, such as Social Security numbers and passcodes.

On March 30, AT&T announced that the dark web dataset compromised the data of 7.6 million current account customers and 65.4 million past account holders. The hackers may have targeted Social Security numbers and passcodes, as well as hacked email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates.

After identifying the hack, AT&T reset millions of active user passcodes and will contact affected account holders to fix the issue. AT&T has not stated whether the leaked data came from the company or a supplier.

The company stated, “Based on our preliminary analysis, the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier,” NPR reported. AT&T does not have any evidence at this time that an unauthorized user gained access to its systems and stole the dataset.

Not for the first time has AT&T encountered a security challenge of this nature. A comparable compromise of data surfaced in 2021, but the organization refrained from publicly disclosing it, as stated by Troy Hunt, a cybersecurity researcher.

“AT&T is likely to be subject to class action lawsuits,” Hunt told AP News. “This is the case if they evaluate the situation and make the incorrect determination, and years has passed without them being able to inform affected customers.”
