Bad Girl Cleared by CBFC: Following months of controversy and public debate, the highly-anticipated Tamil film Bad Girl has ultimately been approved by the CBFC. Varsha Bharath’s directorial venture, produced by renowned filmmaker Vetrimaaran, has earned a U/A certification and is set to hit Indian theatres with parental guidance recommended for children below 12 years. The certification followed weeks of fierce rumors about whether the film would survive the board’s approval given its daring and socially-sensitive content. Now that it’s been officially greenlit, Bad Girl is in theatres September 5, 2025.

Bad Girl’s curiosity began with the release of its teaser, on January 26, 2025. The teaser featured scenes which critics accused Brahmin characters of ridiculing, sparking anger among certain community leaders and political factions. Accusations of “caste-based defamation” quickly ensued, with calls to stop the film’s release. It even went to the Madras High Court, with a petition to prevent the CBFC from certifying the film. The court rejected the plea saying the CBFC is the legitimate authority to decide film content and that petitioner’s objections were hypothetical, given that board had not seen the film then.

Despite the backlash, the movie’s director Varsha Bharath and producers Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap stood by their vision. They explained that Bad Girl isn’t a film made to poke fun at or offend any community, but instead is a socially relevant coming of age drama that explores the complexities of tradition, identity and female freedom. Bharath, who directs her first feature with this film, stressed the story’s basis in reality and real feelings and experiences, especially those experienced by young women trying to negotiate society.

Star Cast and Creative Team

Bad Girl has a stunning cast headlined by Anjali Sivaraman as Ramya, whose coming of age forms the center of the film. Backing her up are veteran performers such as Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, Teejay Arunasalam and Sashank Bommireddipalli. Behind the camera, the film has an impressive team, with preetha Jayaraman, Jagadeesh Ravi and Prince Anderson on Cinematography, and Radha Sridhar on editing. Interestingly, the film is Amit Trivedi’s first foray into Tamil cinema as a music composer, introducing a new sonic flavor to Tamil film tracks. Even the art departments of production design, sound and costume have done wonders in making the film visually and emotionally appealing.

About Bad Girl

Bad Girl is a coming-of-age story that tracks Ramya from school, through college, depicting her emotional, intellectual and social maturation. At its heart, the movie was about defiance, self-discovery, camaraderie, sexual whoa-ness and liberation in the face of a stiff and closed-minded culture. The narrative delves into how these young women, particularly those hailing from orthodox households, balance their internal desires with external restrictions. This narrative, as intimate as it is, echoes broader cultural discussions on gender and independence in contemporary India.
