After three weeks of incarceration, Santa Anna was compelled to sign a peace agreement requiring the Mexican army to withdraw from the region, effectively allowing the Republic of Texas to obtain independence. The treaty also compelled him to advocate in Mexico City for Texas’ independence. These events resulted in the immortalization of the Texan rallying chants “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad,” as well as the national recognition of General Houston.
