A couple from Katihar has committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling due to excessive debt after killing their minor son at their rented accommodation near medical college locality under Muffasil police station on Tuesday.
The victims were known to be Manish Kumar (42), his wife Mona Kumari (35) and their three-year-old son Samrat.
Katihar SP (in charge) Aditya Kumar informed media that Manish was a businessman and his wife Mona was a social worker.
According to TOI, SP said, “Manish and Mona were found hanging from a rope tied to a hook fixed in the ceiling,” he said, adding Manish was switching different businesses, including television and mobile sales to do well off economically. “He had also taken a lot of loans from several people.”
“The two left a four-page suicide note stating that they took the extreme step after being unable to pay a massive loan of Rs 30 lakh,” the SP stated, adding the incident might have taken place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
“He was under pressure to repay them but due to failure in business he was probably unable to do it,” he said adding the bodies were sent for post-mortem at Sadar hospital
According to the SP’s preliminary investigation, the couple first poisoned their son and then hanged themselves to death.
