In January 1993, Handy-Kendi was profoundly moved by the sight of Malcolm X being gunned down by other black individuals. While riding the bus back home alone, her mind wandered to contemplate potential actions she could take to put an end to the violence and promote peace. Handy-Kendi reflected on that occasion by stating, “I heard the creator tell me that more black love is required.” This prompted her to observe Black Love Day in February of that year. The year following the tragic loss of her son to an act of violence, she observed the occasion once more.
Handy-Kendi described in an interview with “The Daily Dot” the intended nature of the celebration. She stated, “On this day, we encourage people to do something extremely simple: show love for twenty-four hours, celebrate and atone, extend forgiveness to one another and oneself, and accept the five black love tenets, which are extremely important principles.” Additionally, individuals are motivated to exchange greetings using the phrase “Nya Akoma,” which translates to “be patient” or “get a heart.”
White people are now invited to participate in the celebrations to “exemplify love in action on Black Love Day,” per the recommendation of Handy-Kendi’s significant other. This inclusiveness was necessary for the reconciliation and reestablishment of affection in the relationships of both blacks and whites. As a result, whites were compelled to critically analyze their white privilege and racial attitudes. Present day, Black Love Day, has gained significant popularity as a hashtag on social media, contributing to the increased dissemination of information regarding the day.
