Although women in India are seen as Goddess ‘Laxmi,’ and perform puja in their respective homes every day, when it comes to performing rituals at wedding or at any other religious ceremonies, they have been overlooked for years. In fact, for centuries, many Hindu rituals have been performed only by male priests.
However, things do seem to be changing for the better now. Vijay Chauthaiwale, the chief of the Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party, has shared a picture of his niece’s wedding ceremony on Twitter. Notably, the ritual of the ceremony was performed by a lady priest.
“Change begins at home. When my niece got married yesterday in Nagpur, the wedding ceremony was presided by women priests,” Chauthaiwale tweeted.

Interestingly, the traditional male bastion crumbled recently with the renowned 900-year old Vitthoba Temple in the pilgrim town of Pandharpur that scripted religious history with appointing its first women priests from the backward classes.
