Carb Day 2023 (US): Dates, History and Facts

Carb Day is observed on the last Friday before the Indy 500, which will occur on May 26 this year. Its name is derived from “carburetion.” This day features the largest automobile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is preceded by the final practise session. This is where teams fine-tune their carburetors and chassis to ensure that their cars are race-ready. Carburetors have not been used in qualifying vehicles since 1963, but the name has persisted. Carb Day is now synonymous with parties, and it is a massive celebration held before each race at which numerous renowned performers perform at concerts.

HISTORY OF CARB DAY

“Carburetion Day” has been celebrated as “Carb Day” since the year 2000. In addition to the final practise session, there will be a pit stop competition, a support race and a concert on the final day. Before the middle of the 1950s, Carb Day was private. Now, it is a crucial component of the month-long buildup to the Indy 500. Carb Day never had a set date, but in 1969 it was held on the Wednesday preceding the race. The event was then relocated to the Thursday preceding the race. Currently, Carb Day occurs on the Friday preceding the actual race.

During the activities leading up to the Indianapolis 500, the Pit Stop Challenge and the Indy Lights Freedom 100 are conducted. The first Pit Stop Challenge took place in 1977. This is one of the most important events at Carb Day, giving pit crew members an opportunity to shine. Although it is primarily a recreational activity, the personnel take it very seriously. The Indy Lights Freedom 100 is the supporting competition for the main event. The first race of 1979 was conducted only once and not on Carb Day.

The race was added to the official event schedule in 2003 and is contested on the second weekend of the time trials. Attendance was low, indicating that this event was controversial. 2005 saw the relocation of the Indy Lights Freedom 100 automobile race to Carb Day. Since the 1990s, live concerts have been a significant attraction for audiences. In 2005, concerts were conducted at the track itself rather than in the city. Typical performers at these Carb Day concerts include Rick Springfield, REO Speedwagon, and Styx, among others.
