The mother goddess “Chhathi Maiya” gives the weak people in society courage and support. She is revered as the “Festival Goddess.” Both in the morning of the second day and in the evening of the first day, the Sun is offered arghya, a specific kind of offering. Four days are dedicated to the rituals.

They consist of taking holy baths, going on fasts and refraining from drinking water (Vrata), spending a lot of time in the water, and making prasad and arghya gifts to the setting and rising sun. Some worshippers march in prostration as they make their way to the river’s banks.

Without regard to caste, colour, or socioeconomic status, all followers show up at the banks of rivers or ponds to offer prayers.
