Gujarat Congress in-charge Rajeev Satav will visit Gujarat soon to end the imbroglio over the leadership in the state unit.
Both the state president and the Leader of Opposition Party (LOP) had accepted responsibility for the party’s defeat in the recent bypolls and had tendered their resignations right after the poll results.
Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda and Paresh Dhanani, the LOP in Gujarat Assembly had tendered their resignations right after the 8 bypolls. The resignations were offered to Satav at the time and he had confirmed that and expressed earlier that the party will be deciding on it by the month’s end.
Congress lost all seats in Gujarat Bypolls
The Congress had lost all 8 seats for which bypolls were necessitated, due to the resignations of former Congress MLAs, 5 of whom later joined the BJP. Four of them even contested and won the elections. The resignations were prior to the Rajya Sabha election, indirectly helping the BJP to gain an extra seat in the upper house of Parliament, in the form of Narhari Amin.
Manish Doshi, GPCC spokesperson said, “Yes, the Gujarat incharge will be coming to the state within a period of 10 days.”
Even Satav himself, accepting responsibility for the party’s defeat in the bypolls, had offered his resignation to a special committee aiding interim party chief Sonia Gandhi.
Political pundits speculate that Arjun Modhwadia, a senior Congressmen and a former LOP, may be back as state Congress chief. The party has very few choices ahead of local body elections in February 2021.
