Coronavirus LIVE updates: India on Thursday reported 25,404 new COVID-19 cases, which pushed the caseload in the country to 3,32,89,579. 339 deaths were also reported in 24 hours, taking the death count to 4,43,213. With this, the active number of cases went up to 3,62,207.

The day also saw 37,127 recoveries, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,24,84,159. The recovery rate was recorded at 97.56 per cent. With 14,30,891 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

The weekly positivity rate stands at 2.07 per cent less than 3 per cent for the last 81 consecutive days. Meanwhile, the daily positivity rate stands at 1.78 per cent which has been less than 3 per cent for the last 15 days.

A reduction of 12,062 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

In the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases in the southern state, the Goa government has made five-day quarantine compulsory for people, especially students and those coming for work purposes from Kerala, officials said.

In a notification issued on Sunday, the Goa administration also extended the ongoing statewide curfew till September 20, continuing a ban on several activities, including casinos, in the coastal state.

The notification also mentioned that “all students and employees coming from Kerala” shall undergo institutional quarantine for five days.

“The arrangements for quarantining students will be made by the administrators or principals of the educational institutions,” the notification said.

“For the employees, it shall be done by respective offices, companies, or firms,” it adds. (PTI)

56 arrested for violating COVID-19 norms in Maharashtra’s Thane

Police have raided a bar in Maharashtra’s Thane district and arrested 56 people, including waitresses and customers, for allegedly violating the COVID-19 protocols and indulging in obscenity, an official said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police raided the bar located in the Manpada area of Dombivli town on Sunday night and found various members of the bar staff and customers not wearing masks and also not following the social distancing norm, senior police inspector Vilas Patil of Kalyan crime unit-III said. Sikkim orders reopening of colleges, institutions from September 16

The Sikkim government has asked colleges and other institutions of higher education in the state to reopen from tomorrow.

An education department circular issued by the additional chief secretary to the education department, G P Upadhyaya, which was made public on Monday, said that the state government has decided to reopen all colleges and institutions of higher learning from September 14 on the understanding that most of the students have got themselves either fully or partially vaccinated by now.

All government, private, private-aided and unaided schools will, however, remain close till October 31 as per a circular issued two days ago.

New cases on rise: 541 fresh COVID-19 cases, 2 new fatalities reported in Mizoram

Mizoram on Monday reported 541 new COVID-19 cases, including 123 children, which was 548 less than the previous day’s count, pushing the state’s tally to 71,381, a health department official said.

The COVID-19 death rose to 238 as two more fatalities due to the contagion were reported in the last 24 hours, he said.

The single-day infection rate rose to 31 percent against 13.98 percent on Sunday.

Two new COVID-19 cases were reported in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which pushed the case tally to 7,582, a health official said on Monday.

Passengers arriving by flight have to undergo a mandatory RT-PCR test before they are allowed entry into the islands, the official said.

COVID-19 lockdown eased in South Africa as vaccinations reduce severity of infections

South Africa on Sunday reduced the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions to Level 2 of its five-level lockdown strategy, largely due to vaccinations having decreased the severity of illness in those who are infected, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced.

“We know that a vaccinated person can still be infected and can still pass on the virus to others. But what we are seeing is those very few people who are vaccinated against COVID-19 are becoming severely ill with the disease, and very few are ending up in ICU or needing ventilation,” Ramphosa said in a national address.

More single-day recoveries than fresh cases in Arunachal Pradesh

Single-day COVID-19 recoveries outnumbered fresh cases in Arunachal Pradesh, as 57 more people recuperated from the disease while 22 new infections were registered, a health department official said here on Monday.

No new fatality was reported in the last 24 hours, the official said.

The COVID-19 recovery rate improved marginally to 98.52 percent from 98.45 percent the previous day, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr. Lobsang Jampa said.

Special vaccination drive in Telangana to inoculate 3 lakh people daily

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has instructed Health department officials to take up a special drive of vaccination against COVID-19 and inoculate three lakh people, daily as there is a possibility of the state getting the required quantities of the vaccine following augmented production.

An official release issued on Sunday night, quoting KCR said, though the COVID-19 spread is in control in the State, the special drive of the vaccination should be taken up so that people should not suffer in the future due to the pandemic.
