After a cabinet meeting conducted to discuss the coronavirus situation, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said at least 1,116 people are under observation — 149 in isolation wards of various hospitals and 967 under home quarantine.

Fresh cases include friends and relatives of Italy-returned couple and their son who had tested positive for the coronavirus along with two more kin staying with them at their home in Ranni in Pathanamthitta, health minister KK Shailaja, said.

She said the parents of the Italy-returned couple are among the six latest positive cases. A three-year child of the couple who returned from Italy tested positive in Kochi on Monday.

Vijayan said schools, colleges and cinema halls will remain closed in the state till March 31. Classes from I to VII standards of all schools – state, CBSE and ICSE boards would remain close and exams which have started for them will be put on hold. Class 10th, 12th and vocational higher secondary exams will continue.

Final exams of class 8th and 9th also will also continue as usual. Biometric punching at secretariat and all government offices and PSUs has been stopped till March 31. Private sector organisations should also take similar measure, the CM said.

Kerala is being hit by the deadly virus second time after the country’s first three confirmed cases in the state which were cured last month.
