Couple Arrested for Hijacking Truck Loaded with 2.5 Tonne Tomatoes: A Tamil Nadu couple was apprehended near Chikkajala, Bengaluru, for hijacking a truck carrying 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes by feigning an accident. They sold the tomatoes in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, near Ambur. The incident occurred on July 8, and the vehicle’s tomatoes were valued at over Rs 2.5 lakhs.

The police claim that the Vellore-native couple was a member of a highway robbery organisation. They demanded compensation from Mallesh, a farmer from Hiriyur in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka, alleging that the truck had collided with their vehicle.

According to a PTI report, the farmer was transporting the tomatoes to Kolar when he refused to pay the money, resulting in his assault by the gang and the theft of the vehicle carrying the tomatoes. Following the victim’s complaint, the RMC Yard police traced the vehicle and apprehended the gang. The accused couple, identified as Bhaskar (28) and his wife Sindhuja (26), were apprehended on Saturday. Rocky, Kumar, and Mahesh, the remaining three members of the group, remain at large.

The accused perpetrators were charged with violating sections 346A (kidnapping, abduction, or detention) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to a News Minute report, the gang of robbers noticed the truck transporting tomatoes and followed it. They halted the truck and assaulted the farmer and the driver of a Bolero commercial vehicle, claiming their vehicle had been struck. The criminals then demanded money, which was ultimately transmitted to their mobile phones online. Following the transfer of funds, they entered the cargo vehicle with the farmer, but later forced him out and drove the tomato-laden truck to Tamil Nadu.

Police officials also discovered CCTV footage containing hints about the accused couple. The couple who allegedly sold the tomatoes parked the vehicle between Peenya and Bengaluru before fleeing to Tamil Nadu in a vehicle without a licence plate.

Tomatoes currently cost more than Rs 100 per kilogramme in markets across the nation. In Halebeedu, Karnataka, a theft of tomatoes was reported a few days ago. A woman claimed that 2.5 lakh rupees worth of tomatoes were kidnapped from her farm.
