COVID-19: AIIMS doctors returning from emergency duty beaten up by cops in Bhopal

In an appalling incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, two PG doctors of AIIMS-Bhopal, including a woman, were allegedly beaten up by cops in Bag Sewania area on Wednesday evening despite showing ID cards.

As per media reports, one of them, Dr Yuvraj Singh, suffered a fractured arm. SP (South) Sai Krishna S Thota ordered an inquiry and took a constable off active duty.

Dr Singh and his colleague Dr Ritu released a video statement on social media in which they narrated their ordeal. They say they were returning home from emergency duty when a police patrol stopped them. “

We showed our ID cards but they started misbehaving with us and hit us with sticks. The cops were shouting: ‘Yeh Corona faila rahe hain, doctors bahar thodi ghumte hain (these people are spreading corona, doctors don’t move around)’,” the duo said.

ASP Sanjay Sahu said Bag Sewania police got information on Wednesday that some people were gathering in violation of lockdown.

“At the same time, three PG doctors posted at AIIMS, who were probably returning on two-wheelers after purchasing milk, were stopped by police. A constable is alleged to have hit them with his stick, instructing them to return,” he said .

The country is currently observing nation-wide lockdown which is said to end on April 14 but there is chance of it being extended owing to increase in no. of coronavirus cases.
