Delhi Metro’s New Aerocity–Terminal 1 Link: Delhi’s airport connectivity set for a major boost. Delhi government has approved a new underground metro line directly connecting the IGI Airport Terminal 1 with Aerocity. It will reduce the journey time to all the terminals as well as enhance Delhi Metro’s network. It will connect Aerocity Metro Station and Terminal 1, IGI Airport by late 2028.
Delhi Metro’s New Aerocity–Terminal 1 Link
The upcoming metro line is part of Delhi Metro’s phase IV/ V corridor and the journey will provide metro connectivity of the ‘Golden Line’. The approximately 2.3 km metro tunnel will pass completely underground, considering the operating and safety requirements of the airport. After becoming operational, the project will directly connect the Aerocity Metro Station with the present Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line –T-1 at IGI Airport.
Route of the New Metro Corridor
The alignment will include:
- Aerocity Metro Station
- New 2.3-km underground tunnel
- Terminal 1 IGI Airport Metro Station
The corridor will serve as an extension of the Golden Line, allowing passengers to interchange between:
- Golden Line
- Magenta Line
- Airport Express Line
This integration will make travelling across Delhi and NCR considerably more convenient for air passengers.
Currently, passengers travelling between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 largely depend on airport shuttle buses, taxis or private vehicles. Shuttle buses generally operate at intervals of around 20 minutes, making transfers slower during peak hours.
After the metro extension becomes operational, travellers from Terminal 1 will be able to board the Golden Line, reach Aerocity within minutes, and interchange with the Airport Express Line to access Terminal 3. Officials estimate that the Terminal 1–Terminal 3 journey could take only 6 to 7 minutes via the metro interchange.

Aerocity to Become a Major Transport Hub
The project is expected to transform Aerocity into one of Delhi’s largest multimodal transit hubs.
The station will integrate:
- Airport Express Line
- Golden Line
- Proposed Delhi–SNB–Alwar Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)
Construction Timeline
According to officials, the project is currently in the planning and pre-construction stage, with activities such as design work and tender preparation underway.
Expected milestones include:
- Corridor length: 2.3 km
- Type: Fully underground
- Current status: Planning and pre-construction
- Expected completion: Late 2028
The Aerocity–Terminal 1 underground corridor is part of Delhi Metro’s long-term strategy to improve airport connectivity and create an integrated public transport network. By linking the Magenta Line, Golden Line and Airport Express Line, the project is expected to make airport transfers faster.
