Demonetisation: Cracks in Opposition parties; Mamata to attend meeting

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Delhi on Monday to be present at a meeting of opposition parties and a joint press conference on Tuesday along with Congress, DMK, RJD and other parties.

Mamata, who is leading the fight against demonetisation, will be part of the joint opposition meeting, said TMC sources. “The Congress has called me for the meeting. Let’s see what happens!” Banerjee told reporters.

Banerjee will attend the media briefing at Constitution Club with other Opposition leaders including representatives from DMK and RJD among others. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Vice-president Rahul Gandhi will attend the meeting.

Notably, Left parties who were so far against the demonetization move and criticised the government on many occasions, are staying away from the meeting. The JD(U) also gave hints that it may follow suit.

“It is the CPI-M’s internal matter. But we feel that it is for them to decide on which side they are,” a top TMC leader said while reacting to CPI-M’s pull-out as per a report in the Indian Express.

Banerjee will be in Delhi for three days and likely to meet several leaders from different political party.

We want to draw attention to the hardships caused owing to demonetisation across the nation, claimed a senior TMC leader.
