Devshayani Ekadashi also known as Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi falls today, July 12 at 1.02 am and it marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four months of the rainy season. It is said that on this day, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep and wakes up after four months on Prabhodhini Ekadashi.
This Ekadashi arrives just after the famous Jagannath Rath Yatra and currently falls in the months of June or July on the English calendar.
Just like other Ekadashi, this is also like the others, Shayani Ekadashi to help to attain salvation and fulfill wishes. It gives freedom from sins committed in the past.
Devshayani Ekadashi is also known as Padma Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi, and Hari Shayani Ekadashi. The auspicious festival is more popular in Maharashtra and is known by the name of Ashadi Ekadashi.
Ashadhi Ekadashi also witnesses an important celebration of the Pandharpur Wari which is a pilgrimage observed by the devotees. There are religious processions held at different places with people singing praises of Lord Vishnu and doing the traditional dance to celebrate Ashadhi Ekadashi.
